The main purpose of editing is to help tell the story more easier. The main focus editors need to concentrate is the genre that they are editing the footage to, each genre can be produced differently to control what the audience is viewing. The right camera angles and lighting effects need to be picked to match the theme of the video, for example horror, romance, comedy, documentary.
To use effective storytelling when editing we achieve this by controlling the audiences point of view. The shots that are decided to be produced in production need to be exactly what the editor needs to tell the story in the edit.
A genre is something that a specific thing is catogarised into which includes similarities such as form, style or subject matter.
GENRE
HORROR
In this short film to create a more horror atmosphere they used special sound clips to build up the tension. The editors for this short film also used a colour corrector effect to make some of the scenes more dark and spooky. Most horror films rely on their soundtracks to make it seem more scary for the audience and they also use dark effects to make it seem more dark and not bright and happy.
ROMANTIC COMEDY
In this trailer for a romantic comedy the atmosphere is incredibly different compared to the horror clip. Romantic comedys use lots of bright lightening and upbeat music to make the audience feel more happy when they are watching them. This trailer also made sure to include a lot of funny lines from the movie which shows that it a very comedic film.
ACTION
You can instantly tell that this is a trailer for an action movie because the first clips it starts out with are explosions. Action movies tend to be very fast paced and involve lots of fighting and dramatic things happening.
PACE AND RHYTHM
Pace of cutting is used to control the tension in a scene, the more cuts per minute, the faster the pace.
This is an example of fast paced editing:
This is a fast paced edit because there are lots of different clips that change quicker in this trailer.
This is an example of a slow paced edit:
This is a slow paced edit becuase each clip stays on the screen longer and the whole pace of the trailer is more slow.
A fast paced edit usually symbolising exciting things such as action with fighting and explosions happening. Dance movies can also be fast paced because dancing is a very uplifting and moving sport so a fast paced edit would match it better.
Slow paced edits are usually used for more serious things, this can include sad films or even romantic ones. This is used because it allows you to view the characters in more depth and feel the connection between the actors.
COMBINING SHOTS INTO SEQUENCES TO ENGAGE THE VIEWER
This is an example of combining individiual shots into a sequence to make the viewer more interested. The editing is fast paced so it doesn't stay on a clip very long so it's changing every few seconds. This makes something that could be perceived as boring to some people look more exciting because lots of different things are happening. This technique is good because each shot is intertwined and it leads up to what's going to happen next.
