The Conventions and Techniques of Editing


Shot Reverse Shot


This is an example of a shot reverse shot. This camera work is usually used in dialogue sequences when two characters are interacting with each other. The point of view moves from the face of one person to the reverse view of the person they are talking to.

This is an example of a montage sequence. A montage sequence is usually used to show a characters development through time. This could include things such as overcoming a fear and training to become better at something.
In that clip the girl is learning a specific dance routine and as it goes on you can see how she fails but eventually learns to do the routine.



How to cut up a clip by setting an and out points


This print screen shows how you set an in and out point in Final Cut Pro. To do this you simply press the 'I' key on your keyboard for where you want the start of your clip to begin and the 'O' key on your keyboard for where you want it to end. After you've done that you simply click on the video and drag it into the timeline.


How to make a dissolve transition between two clips


This is a print screen of how to add a dissolve transition into Final Cut Pro. You pick the clips you want your dissolve to happen on and then you cut them apart and add this transition in between them.



How to make a wipe trarnsition between two clips


This is a print screen of how to add a wipe transition into Final Cut Pro. You pick the clips you want your dissolve to happen on and then you cut them apart and add this transition in between them.



How to edit a cut-away into an interview


This is a print screen of basically how you would edit a cut-away in any editing software. You simply cut the video down and then put the clip you want to cut to in next to it.  This technique is used a lot if interviews have jumps in them or the video file is corrupted.
